The game was one of the first to break out of arcades and milk bars and into the consciousness of non-gamers. A little lesser-known, but Konami fans should give the Thunder Cross titles a spin. Whenever someone brings up Konami shooters, talk inevitably centres around Gradius / Salamander / Parodius, but there two are up there with them. @glympe I've recently enjoyed Shenandoah 1993 which has purchasable upgrades.

Not quite like Sky Force, but it's a fun game that just a different kind of shooter. Gradius on Nintendo Switch Online, Darius Collection, now playing Raiden on Arcade Archives... Would love it if Axelay made it to the Super Nintendo Switch Online. Ther best shoot-em-up on switch is Radiant Silvergun and that's not even out yet. No Sky Force and no Super Hydorah and no Rival Megagun and no Stardust Galaxy?

For those of us in the retro gaming world, shooter fans or basically anyone who listens to Drunken Gamers Radioit also means Shmuppreciation month. It is all for the love of the shoot ’em up, these days called “shmups” for short. What’s distinct about the shmup is that aside from most other genres, it has been around as long as video games themselves – yes, the first video game was a shmup – and has remained relatively unchanged for more than 30 years. As an avid fan with probably more than $1,000 in shmups alone among almost every system – did I mention the shmup has some of the most expensive games in existence? 1985 saw the release of Konami's Gradius, which gave the player greater control over the choice of weaponry, thus introducing another element of strategy.

Fortunately, there's a wide variety of shoot 'em ups available to PC gamers, ranging from bullet hell to traditional. If you're looking to explore what the genre offers, consider this guide a launchpad. Soar into action and blast everything that moves in these thrilling shoot 'em ups, aka shmups. The term "shmup" is believed to have been coined in 1985 by the British Commodore 64 magazine Zzap!

Fast-forward 15 years and Infinite Dragoon the game can now be enjoyed from the comfort of your PC, with the original gameplay, soundtrack, and visuals all intact. Islands of Wakfu, a mixture of shoot 'em up and beat 'em up games. Characters with linear shots can easily destroy strong enemies without having to point-blank the target. They will also have fast speed, allowing them to zip around to destroy multiple enemies, pick up items, etc. However, hitting anything to the sides will require the player to move a lot, and the fast speed may make precision maneuvers difficult.

And there's also Black Paradox, a simple but enjoyable shmup with upgrades, great pixel visuals and great music too. Steredenn is in my top five games on the Switch, and R-Type is a game I buy on every platform. I'm a little surprised to find I have 11 of the games on this list, and I'm buying Raiden IV Mikado and Cotton Reboot very soon. Only one of these games, that I have on the Nintendo Switch, is Raiden V, which I really enjoyed played. I should definitely, look into checking a couple more of these game out, see if anything else catches my interest. I wish we have more of these coming to the Switch as I am currently collecting classic shmups.
